Hearing loss is not as uncommon as you might think. While more men report hearing loss than women about one in eight Americans 12 years or older have hearing loss in both ears. From the office of Dr. Jenny Carroll at Doctors Hearing Center at the ENT and Allergy HearingAssociates of South Georgia in Valdosta, find out the leading causes of hearing loss and how we can help.

Hearing Loss Causes

There are many reasons why someone may experience hearing loss. Common causes include,

  • Ear infections
  • Bone tumors or growths in the outer or middle ear
  • A ruptured eardrum (loud noises, extreme pressure changes and infections can rupture the eardrum)
  • Inner ear damage (often caused by aging and exposure to loud sounds)
  • Earwax buildup (causes temporary hearing loss)

So, what exactly can put you at risk for hearing loss? A number of factor can:

  • Aging
  • Loud noises
  • Genetics
  • Certain occupations (e.g. construction or factory work)
  • Certain medications (e.g. high doses of pain relievers, antimalarial medications, etc.)
  • Illnesses that can result in a high fever (e.g. meningitis)

Your Treatment Options

For hearing loss caused by earwax buildup, you can either opt to get an earwax removal kit from your local drugstore or have one of our ear, nose and throat doctors in Valdosta do it for you. By removing the blockage hearing is almost immediately restored.

If an injury to the ear or chronic ear infections is causing your hearing loss, surgery may be necessary for repairing the injury or to place small tubes the ears so they can drain properly.

If your hearing loss is due to inner ear damage, a hearing aid is the most common way to improve how you hear sounds. There are many hearing aid options that offer an array of benefits to help you hear those around you. We would be happy to sit down with you and determine which kind of hearing device would be right for your type of hearing loss.

Don’t let hearing loss affect your quality of life. Schedule an appointment today with Dr. Jenny Carroll at Doctors Hearing Center at the ENT and Allergy Associates of South Georgia in Valdosta for the care you need so you can become part of the conversation again.
