Sometimes a sore throat will go away on its own and other times you will require the proper medical treatment.
We know that for a lot of people they don’t want to jump the gun when it comes to visiting one of our Valdosta, GA otolaryngologists Dr. Ronald Allen, Dr. Thomas Phillips or Dr. Theodore Kanne for care. Sometimes simple issues like congestion, stuffy nose or a sore throat will easily go away on their own without requiring our care, but there are certainly some instances where you will want to come in to have your sore throat examined.
There are different things that can cause a sore throat, from viruses and allergies to bacteria to post-nasal drip. A sore throat is a symptom of another issue that is going on. If your strep throat is accompanied by a fever, rash or headache then you could be suffering from strep throat. Since bacteria cause strep throat it will need to be treated right away with antibiotics.
A virus can also be to blame for your sore throat. You may also notice a cough or runny nose along with your sore throat. If this is the case, a viral infection often goes away on its own without care. Unlike a bacterial infection, antibiotics will not be effective for treating a virus. You can take over-the-counter medications and try home remedies to ease your symptoms until the virus goes away.
If you believe your child or you have strep throat then it’s certainly a good time to call one of our Valdosta ENT doctors. Here are some of the most common symptoms of strep throat:
- Pain when swallowing
- Red, sore throat
When you come in for treatment we will swab the throat and test the sample to see if it comes back positive. If it does come back positive for strep throat we will prescribe antibiotics. Since strep throat is contagious you will want to take antibiotics for at least a full 24 hours before returning to school or work.
